Welcome to STEGOFACTS

Hello, and welcome to my page about the STEGOSAURUS!!!

You have reached STEGOFACTS, the finest source of Stegosaurus stenops information available anywhere on the World Wide Web. Every fact on this site is real. I have checked them in actual books.

* The stegosaurus lived in the Late Jurassic, roughly 155 to 145 million years ago, in what is now the western United States. Its remains come mostly from the Morrison Formation.

* A grown Stegosaurus stenops was around 6.5 metres long and weighed something like 3.5 tonnes. You will see "9 metres" and "5 tonnes" quoted all over the place. Those are the numbers for the largest individuals of a different species, S. ungulatus, and they have been quietly attached to the wrong animal for decades.

* Its name means "roof lizard", because Othniel Charles Marsh, who named it in 1877, first thought the plates lay flat across its back like roof tiles. They did not. He was wrong!

This site is under construction, as all sites are, and always will be.

Pick a fact from the index below. There are only three so far, but I am adding more as I find them. If you know a good stegosaurus fact, please send it to me.

THE COMPLETE STEGOFACT INDEX

001 * The Plates Were Not a Roof
Seventeen bony plates in two staggered rows, and the man who named the animal got all of it wrong.
002 * The Thagomizer
The tail spikes are named after a cartoon, and there is a healed Allosaurus that can tell you they worked.
003 * The Brain, and the Brain That Wasn't
It never had a second brain in its hips, and its first brain was bigger than a walnut.
